Team Member Spotlight: Joe Bigelow
In this Team Member spotlight, I spoke with Joe Bigelow, a Software Engineer at BAFS.
What is your position at BAFS?
I’m a Software Engineer.
How long have you worked at BAFS?
Almost 2 years.
Tell me a bit about your prior experience, education, etc.
Engineering is relatively new for me. I actually transitioned into the field over the last few years.
In college, I received a BFA in Acting and minored in Spanish. Prior to becoming a Software Engineer, I was a professional musical theater performer where I danced and sang around the world.
Those were fun times, but I love what I’m doing now.
What does your day-to-day look like at BAFS?
I spend my time at BAFS working with other Engineers to continuously improve the BLAST software and build out new features. There is a lot of collaboration that goes on within the team to make sure we are working toward our goals as efficiently as possible.
What is your favorite thing about working at BAFS?
Probably the variety of challenges that I encounter on a daily basis with the team. We are exposed to work across the full stack of our applications, so there is always more to learn.
What are three interesting things about you?
1) I have no sense of smell (it probably got knocked out by a virus when I was a baby).
2) My biggest hobby outside of work is bodybuilding.
3) I strive for sustainability in every aspect of my life (supporting local farmers, composting, repurposing old clothing, mending, knitting, gardening, buying secondhand, etc.).
What is one quote that you live by?
“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” ~Maya Angelou
